What is the TOK Exhibition? Steps to create it 😏

The TOK exhibition is one of the new assessment tasks for the years 2023 and 2024. It has replaced the TOK presentation from the syllabus. This individual task has around eight hours of teaching time and is usually completed at the end of the first year of IBDP. The main thing that has to be done is that three objects have to be chosen and one prompt too. Then based on that, a commentary needs to be written so that the concept has to manifest in the real world.

This exhibition is a third of the overall weightage of the TOK. The TOK exhibition word count is 950. Based on this word count, a commentary has to be written. If you are also a student new to the TOK exhibition and want to learn more, continue reading here!

What are the main steps to follow while working on the TOK exhibition?

Here are a few steps you must follow when working on your TOK exhibition. Make sure to follow each of them to score high.

Choosing the IA Prompt ✅

Choosing the IA prompt is the first thing you must do when working on the TOK exhibition. Remember that this is one of the most important steps that you have to take since you will have to connect this to the three objects that you choose. When choosing the prompt, you have to make sure that you choose it right as it is, without any alterations.

Out of a total of 35 prompts, you have to choose one. When doing so, make sure you do your research and have full awareness of what exactly needs to be done. Once you are fully sure of that, you can do an excellent job at the TOK exhibition. Next, choose a prompt that you are fully convinced with. Once you do that, you can do a great job with the exhibition.

Choosing the Objects ✅

Then you need to choose three subjects as you already know. However, there are certain things that you need to bear in mind when selecting the objects. First, what you choose has to be different from what the other students choose. When you choose these objects, you need to make sure that they are of interest to you so that you can end up writing about them rather well.

However, the objects must be within a certain time and place. They should not be generic at all. You can even select TOK exhibition objects that you have created yourself. Think of it this way: the object that you choose has to be a bridge between the prompt and the commentary. So you need to be very careful when you select the objects. Your entire grade depends on the prompt and the objects that you choose.

Planning Meeting ✅

You don’t necessarily have to be a part of the meeting. However, it is recommended that you do exactly that. You can discuss critical parts of the exhibition when you do this. For example, you have to talk about the prompt and the objects you have selected too. This will help you get a better idea of what you are doing.

This is one of the most important parts of the TOK exhibition. In this meeting, you can also discuss how various TOK concepts manifest in the world around us. When you do this, you get a better idea of what you are going to talk about, which again broadens your perspective and gives you a much clearer idea of what you are doing.

Write And Check the Draft Commentary ✅

Next, you do the main part of this task, which is actually to get to draft your TOK commentary. This commentary should include the three objects along with the contexts behind choosing them. You also need to talk about the relationship between the objects and the TOK exhibition IA prompts and the references to the prompt made when analyzing those objects. Giving a clear justification for the objects chosen is mandatory to be able to shed light on why you chose them in the first place and what your understanding of them was.

tok exhibition draft

If you have made any references to other sources, you must reference them clearly. You need to try to be as convincing as you can. Use strong language to ensure that the reader understands what you are trying to say and fully understands the background behind it. Since this is a draft, you can later make changes to it as you deem fit, and then you can work towards writing the final commentary once you make edits to this one.

Many students struggle when it comes to writing a draft commentary. There are several online options that you can explore for help. Writing Metier can help you write a TOK exhibition commentary if needed. All you need to do is get in touch with us on our website, and we will be happy to offer all the help that we can.

Submit the TOK Exhibition File ✅

Once you have written your final commentary, you need to submit it. Make sure that you have a title, the objects, a 950-word commentary, and also cite other sources of information you have used. You must check these before submitting so that you don’t lose any marks because of this. Once this is done, you have to upload your files yourself.

IMPORTANT! Do not miss the submission deadline, my friend 😉

Presenting the TOK Exhibition ✅

Once everything is done, you will be required to present. While this presentation is not mandatory, it is highly advisable that you do it. Why leave out an opportunity to showcase your skills as a presenter to the learning community? You never know what doors of opportunity this can open for you.

So it is recommended that you prepare well and then give the presentation. It is also an opportunity for you to share your experience with the younger students in the same boat as you were a few months ago.

TOK Exhibition Rubric

It is also crucial for you to know how examiners evaluate your TOK essay. This can help you score much better on it. Examiners are looking to see how to analyze the situation critically and what thought process went behind choosing the objects you did.

You can check our detailed explanation of the TOK exhibition rubric here. If you follow each of the points in the list, there is a high chance that you will get the best possible grade.

The idea is to see how you related those objects to the prompt by making a logical connection, which is what was expected of you too. You are expected to interlink ideas seamlessly in the best possible way and are also required to use the evidence correctly. Once you identify the real-world context behind things, it will all become much easier for you.

In our future articles, we will describe the TOK exhibition rubric and structure in detail, so make sure to subscribe or bookmark this blog.

Good luck with your TOK exhibition

As a new student, all of this might seem too overwhelming to you all of a sudden. The truth is that once you get into it, you will understand how simple it is. All you need to do is understand what must be done and follow the necessary requirements to score decently on this. So don’t worry at all. Believe in yourself and know that you can do it!
