“There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.” (Arthur Conan Doyle). Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge.

HINT:

Start this essay by reflecting on what facts mean for truth-makers. Move to the differentiating between reality and appearance – what makes these two different from one another and why are they so prominent aspects in our lives. Do not forget to differentiate between non-trivial and trivial facts in this essay.

Title 4:

“Areas of knowledge always rely on a systematic process of trial and error to aid the production of knowledge.” Discuss this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge.

HINT:

Every IB essay topic involves a lot of research and topic 4 is no different; in fact, you need to dig deeper with this topic. Start by differentiating between a posteriori knowledge and a priori knowledge. You will then need to talk about inductive and deductive reasoning and the role it plays in producing knowledge. Finally, include the role of scientific abduction as inference.

Title 5:

“If all knowledge is provisional, when can we have confidence in what we claim to know?” Answer with reference to two areas of knowledge.

HINT:

Your focus in this essay should be to differentiate between claiming to be aware/claiming to know and knowing. You should then focus on probability in this essay as well because of how it is linked with confidence as well. Finally, in this essay topic you need to reflect on the pragmatic theory of knowledge.

Title 6:

“We are rarely completely certain, but we are frequently certain enough.” Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.

HINT:

In this essay, you can talk about the indecisive human nature and reflect on the self-evident truth and certainty when making claims. Differentiate between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge. Lastly, you need to include the pragmatic theory of knowledge in this essay.
