Topic: Job Versus Entrepreneurship
People sometimes get confused about whether they should do a job or start their own business after graduation. The prospects that come with it tend to make people think before they make a decision for themselves. It can be said that both of these options have equal supporters, but there has been a rise in entrepreneurship over employment in recent years. However, starting a new venture is not easy, and not everyone is comfortable with this idea. Moreover, to start up a new business, a certain level of skill and training is required to provide you with a job. This is why most people go for employment initially to learn new ways of doing things and then opt for a startup. People also work for other firms for financial security as it is a source of guaranteed income. Here we bring you the similarities and differences of doing a job vs. starting your own business.
Doing a job and working on your own business are two completely different things. A job can be defined as full-time or part-time employment or a piece of work. One main characteristic of a job is a fixed number of working hours and a fixed amount of salary at the end of each month. On the other hand, a business can be defined as an organization that has commercial and professional objectives. People in a business work together to achieve a common goal. Some businesses are profit-oriented organizations, while others are non-profit-oriented organizations. Moreover, a business can be divided into three parts according to size: small, medium, and large.
If you work in a job, you will only receive your fixed salary, unlike running your own business. No matter how good the company is performing, an employee will not get a share of the profit that it is making. When a person is running their own business, they will receive all the profit that their business makes. Moreover, running a business comes with taking risks. Each decision that a person takes is a risk, and the risk has to be incurred by the owner of the business. However, doing a job requires no such risk. It is a safe source of income, however limited. The only risk that a job includes is the fear of being terminated. A person has to work for the vision and goals of their boss when doing a job. A business makes you work towards your own vision and goals. Furthermore, the motivation factors of these two options are also very different. Bonuses, rewards, and promotions are what motivates people who are doing a job and working for someone else. However, motivation factors in a business are success, profit, and goodwill. Both of these, doing a job and doing a business, incorporate growth but of different types. The growth in a job is limited. You only grow when you get promoted to a greater post. However, a business helps you grow in numerous ways, such as by expanding and generating more profit. Working for a firm involves great exposure as a person gets to work with people with such different cultural backgrounds in a diverse environment. Doing a business might not give me this opportunity. The particular reason for this circumstance is because it requires other roles and duties. Doing a job involves working for a fixed number of hours, mostly 8 hours. In comparison, a person doing a business can work for as many hours as he wishes to. Motivation levels are comparatively much higher when people work to fulfill their own goals and work harder in such situations. Doing a job makes it easy to manage a work-life balance. A person is able to plan holidays, vacations, and days off accordingly as his work routine is fixed, unlike doing one’s own business. A person needs to work for as many hours as the business requires in order for it to succeed. Holidays are also sometimes compromised because of an irregular routine.
Though doing a job and having one’s own business comprise of completely different experiences, they also have some things in common. Whether one is doing a job or working for their own business, investing a certain amount of time is imperative. Working hours might differ from each other, but both of these options require a certain amount of time. Moreover, both of these necessitate a certain amount of effort. One has to put in their maximum amount of input whether they are working for someone else or their own self. Working for someone else or for your own business calls for some motivation. A person cannot do both if he’s not motivated enough to work, grow and earn a living. Both of these help a person learn new skills grow. They require training of different sorts that make a person more competent and skilled as they require working with different people and doing something different each day. Both of these require hard work. A person cannot succeed without working hard, whether he is doing a job or doing a business. One can be fired from their job if they don’t work hard and match a certain standard. Success becomes very hard for a person doing their own business without hard work.
To conclude everything that has been stated so far, it is quite evident that both of these come with their advantages and disadvantages. It can also be said that the differences between the two overpower their similarities. As mentioned earlier, entrepreneurship can be seen to be on the rise for the past few years as more people are opting to start their own businesses rather than working for another business, mainly because of the lack of freedom that comes with a job. However, one must choose between the two as per their attitude and what suits them best. Not everyone is comfortable with doing a business and vice versa. No matter which option you choose, you must try to be a better person in each field.
